BEAUTY BY SPEC

The Carry-On-Only Weekend Beauty Cart

A four-product makeup cart built for a short trip, a small bag, and as little competition for your liquids bag as possible.

A weekend trip should not require packing your everyday makeup drawer into smaller containers.

This cart is built for two or three nights, carry-on only, with enough makeup to look put together during the day and add definition at night.

The main constraint is not maximum variety. It is getting the most useful roles from the fewest pieces.

THE BEAUTY SPEC

The situation

A two- or three-night trip with carry-on luggage only, limited toiletry space, and no need for a full glam kit.

Constraints

  • Carry-on liquids, gels, creams, aerosols, and pastes compete for limited 3-1-1 bag space.
  • The makeup bag should stay genuinely small.
  • Products that perform more than one useful role are preferred.
  • The routine should work without packing a large brush collection.
  • The cart should cover complexion, brows, lashes, lips, and cheeks.

REQUIRED ROLES

What the cart needs to do

Complexion

A portable solid format that can function as both targeted concealer and broader complexion coverage.

Lip + Cheek

One stick that supplies buildable color to both lips and cheeks and can be blended with fingers.

Brows

A compact pencil with its own spoolie so no separate brow tool is required.

Lashes

One mascara with strong smudge and flake resistance for both daytime and evening definition.

Products selected after the spec

Complexion

MERIT The Minimalist Perfecting Complexion Stick

$38.00

One solid stick replaces the need to pack separate foundation and concealer. It can be used only where coverage is needed or applied more broadly.

  • Manufacturer describes it as a foundation and concealer in one.
  • Lightweight, buildable coverage.
  • Manufacturer states sweat, humidity, and transfer resistance.

Trade-off: This cart prioritizes portability and targeted coverage rather than a traditional liquid foundation finish.

Lip + Cheek

Milk Makeup Lip + Cheek

$28.00

One solid stick performs two visible color roles and can be applied and blended without packing another dedicated tool.

  • Designed for both lips and cheeks.
  • Manufacturer states eight-hour staying power.
  • Buildable satin, second-skin finish.

Trade-off: Using one shade across lips and cheeks deliberately reduces color variety.

Brows

e.l.f. Instant Lift Waterproof Brow Pencil

$5.00

The retractable pencil and included spoolie cover shaping, filling, and grooming in one small item.

  • Waterproof formula.
  • Manufacturer describes the pigment as smudge-resistant.
  • Dual-ended pencil and spoolie.

Trade-off: A pencil creates a different brow finish than a separate gel, pomade, or laminated-brow product.

Lashes

e.l.f. Lash XTNDR Mascara

$8.00

It gives the otherwise minimal cart a defined eye without adding primer, eyeshadow, and multiple eye products.

  • Tubing mascara.
  • Buildable lengthening formula.
  • Manufacturer describes it as clump, flake, and smudge-resistant.

Trade-off: Mascara is still part of the liquids allowance for U.S. carry-on screening, so this cart minimizes liquid makeup rather than eliminating it entirely.

TOTAL

What the complete cart costs

Current manufacturer-listed U.S. prices total $79.00 before tax and shipping.

TRADE-OFFS

Where this cart compromises

  • This cart deliberately sacrifices shade variety and multiple finishes in exchange for fewer pieces.
  • It does not include skincare, sunscreen, makeup remover, or other toiletries, which need to be packed separately according to the traveler's own needs.
  • The mascara still belongs in the carry-on liquids category under current TSA guidance.
  • The complexion stick is relatively expensive compared with many drugstore foundations, but it covers two roles and avoids another liquid bottle.

ALTERNATIVES

When your priority is different

Lower total cost

The complexion stick is the first role to replace. Look for a solid or compact complexion product that can still cover both targeted concealing and broader evening.

More evening drama

Add one compact solid eye product rather than expanding the entire cart.

No mascara in the liquids bag

Skip mascara entirely rather than adding another product solely to preserve the category. The point of this spec is reducing packing complexity.
